Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end. Proverbs 29:11 NIV

It seems like the world is getting crazier every day. Reading the news can be depressing. So many people are getting upset, reacting without thinking and making negative life changing decisions.

Introspection:

The color intensity depends on how many drops you add to the baking soda, 2 or 3 the color will be light, adding 5 or 6 drops the will be darker. Also, how well you mix the mixture determines how well the color is distributed.

What is citric acid? What fruits contain citric acid? How is artifical citric acid made?

Citric acid is found in nature in lemons, limes, oranges and tomatoes. The Citric adic gives fruit a sour taste which ads flavor to our food. In Latin the word citric comes from the word citrus. It is expensive to use fruits so artificial citric acid is used in manffacturing which is made from fermentation of crude sugars (e.g., molasses and corn starch) by the mold Aspergilus niger.

Step 1

(Adults only) Prep your lemon by slicing the bottom off to make them sit flat. Flip the lemon over and slice out the core. If you are making an open-faced volcano, slice the lemon in half.

Step 2

Prepare extra lemon juice by slicing a second lemon in half and juicing it. Pour juice into a cup and set aside.

Step 3

Place your cored lemon on a tray. Use your craft stick to mush the center of the lemon and bring out the juices. Be sure to keep the juice in the lemon!

Step 4

Place a few drops of food coloring or liquid watercolors ( do not dilute) in the center of the lemon.

Step 5

Add in a good squeeze of dish soap to the lemon. This is not necessary but causes the bubbles to ooze and froth more and longer.

Step 6

Add a spoonful of baking soda into the lemon. It should start to fizz. Take your craft stick and stir the lemon and lemon juice. It should start foaming really well as you stir it!

Step 7

To keep the reaction going alternatively add more baking soda, food coloring, dishsoap and the reserved lemon juice to the reaction. Squeezing the lemon to release the juices also enhances the rection. Or if you are like my kids, just stick your whole hand in there and give it a good squeeze…ha!

New Habit

It takes 17 days to develop a new habit. Come up with something that you will do every time you get angry for the next 17 days. Write down how you feel before and after the special thing that you did to calm yourself down.

For example

When I get mad, I go for a walk or swimming which relaxes my body. Then the next day I can address the problem with a cool head.

Prayer Changes Things!!

“People with a hot temper do foolish things; wiser people remain calm.” Proverbs 14:17

A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of his ancestral house. Numbers 1:4 HCSB

Introspection:

Holidays are a wonderful time to get together. When children are out of school for the summer four important holidays occur: Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Forth of July and Labor Day. In addidtion, many families come together to celabrate by having family reunions. Throughout the years, people get married, have babies and others pass away, but family reunions allow ancestral history to be preserved.

Family reunions provide an opportunity for loved ones to come together domestically and abroad to get to know each other and share their history. For instance, historically, Aftican American history has been passes down through storytelling which can ba a ccaptiviating way to learn about gifts, orgins, and traditions that run in the family.

About the Activity: Document Your History

When you see your relatives ask them about your ancestors. Take pictures and make videos of conversations document your family’s history and create a legacy. Start a family social media page, share your work, and encourage family members to share pictures of what is happening in their lives to stay connected.

A great place to start is to consider what gifts you have. For example, my children sing, dance and play instruments; I do not have any these gifts which made me curious about who they got them from. After talking with my Aunt, the matriarch of my family, she shared that in my grandmother’s family, there were seven childrean and they all played instruments, as well as family members who had beautiful voices. Maybe you can bake or draw very well? Consider asking your relatives if they can do the same thing too?

Activity

Create a family tree. You can find templates on the internet. Consider asking these questions to understand more about your ancestry.

Is your family religious?

What is your family known for?

Who is the best cook?

Do you have any inventors in your family?

Do you have any entrepreneurs in your family?

Does your family own land and if so , how will it be passed down to the next generation?

What ethic groups do your family members belong to?

Challenge

Create your family tree and ask other relativies to do the same. Then the next time you get together, see who could go back the farthest to identify the start of your family. Can you trace your family back to Africa, Asia, Europe. etc? Learning about your history can lead you down a thrilling path of understanding who your are and where you come from.
